Rognvald Eysteinsson (''Ragnvald Øysteinsson Mørejarl''), a close friend and ally of King Harald I of Norway, was one of the first jarls of Møre.〔(''Ragnvald Øysteinsson Mørejarl – utdypning'' (Store norske leksikon) )〕 During the early Viking era, Norway consisted of a number of petty kingdoms. King Harald I was able to unite them all after winning the Battle of Hafrsfjord in 872. Subsequently King Harald I divided the unified kingdom again, granting land to his sons and other jarls.
